On the one hand, Norbert Delman’s work refers to the contemporary cult of the body, underpinned by strenuous muscle-building at the gym, and to constant coercion from the masculine image, symbolising dominance and supremacy. On the other hand, it hints at the fascist aesthetic undercurrents of the athletic male physique, symbolising the superman. The artist’s colourful, stylised computer printouts add some ironic, pop-culture distance which calls these collective fantasies into question. Their status is worth investigating, particularly if they might lead to a mindless fascination with violence and manifestations of physical force.
